Make the best Magic Cookie Bars, a classic layered dessert featuring a graham cracker crust, chocolate chips, coconut, nuts, and sweetened condensed milk for a rich, chewy texture. This recipe is simple and perfect for crowds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (Eagle Brand recommended)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/2 cup butterscotch chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. Prepare the crust: In a medium bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter until fully combined. Press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Bake the crust for 8 minutes until lightly set. Remove from the oven.
  4. Pour the entire can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the warm crust. This acts as the binder for your layers.
  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the milk layer.
  6. Distribute the flaked coconut over the chocolate chips.
  7. Sprinkle the chopped nuts and butterscotch chips (if using) over the coconut layer.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the condensed milk is bubbly.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Cooling is important for clean cutting.
  10. Once cool, lift the bars out using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into squares.

Notes

  • For the best gooey texture, use a full-fat, high-quality sweetened condensed milk like Eagle Brand.
  • If you want a richer flavor, lightly toast the coconut flakes before sprinkling them on top.
  • Allow the bars to cool for at least 2 hours before cutting; chilling them speeds up this process.
  • To make this recipe nut-free, simply omit the nuts.
