Make the best homemade chocolate buttercream frosting that is rich, creamy, and fluffy. This easy recipe is perfect for topping your favorite cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk, plus more if needed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until it is light and creamy.
  2. Add the cocoa powder to the butter and mix until fully combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until incorporated.
  4. Pour in the vanilla extract and the milk. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  5. Add the salt and mix briefly to combine. If the frosting seems too thick, add milk, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired spreading consistency.
  6. Use this creamy chocolate frosting immediately on cakes or cupcakes.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa powder.
  • If your butter is too warm, the frosting will be too soft to hold its shape for piping. Chill it briefly if this happens.
  • This recipe makes enough frosting for one 9-inch layer cake or about 18 cupcakes.
