Make these highly flavorful green beans using just five simple ingredients. This recipe delivers tender beans coated in a savory-sweet glaze, enhanced by crispy bacon, making it an irresistible side dish for weeknights or holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon pieces in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon bits with a slotted spoon and set them aside on a paper towel-lined plate. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet with the bacon grease. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until the beans start to become tender-crisp.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, and water until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the green beans in the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the beans, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the reserved crispy bacon pieces.
  7. Serve immediately as a quick vegetable side or a comfort food side dish.

Notes

  • For a low carb vegetable sides option, you can substitute the brown sugar with a low-carb sweetener equivalent.
  • If you prefer a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika when sautéing the beans.
  • This recipe works well with frozen green beans if you do not have fresh green beans available.
