Ingredients
Scale
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium saucepan. Whisk these dry ingredients together until no lumps remain.
Pour in the water and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Do not overcook, or the sauce will become too thick when cool.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the butter until it melts completely and incorporates into the sauce.
Stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour the sauce into a heatproof jar or container. Let it cool slightly before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
Notes
For a thicker, fudge-like sauce, simmer for an additional 1-2 minutes.
To keep the sauce glossy, stir in 1 tablespoon of cold butter right after removing it from the heat.
This sauce is excellent as a decadent dessert topping or an easy fruit dip recipe.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave to restore a pourable consistency.
