Make the best refreshing homemade lemonade with this recipe. You achieve the perfect sweet-tart balance using fresh lemon juice and simple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 46 lemons)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water (for simple syrup)
  • 4 cups cold water (for dilution)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: Combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves. Do not boil. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  2. Squeeze fresh lemons to yield 1 cup of juice. Strain the juice to remove pulp and seeds.
  3. Combine the cooled simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, and 4 cups of cold water in a large pitcher.
  4. Stir the mixture well until fully combined. Taste the lemonade and adjust sweetness or tartness if needed by adding a little more water or lemon juice.
  5. Chill the lemonade in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving for best flavor.
  6. Serve the homemade lemonade over ice, garnished with fresh lemon slices.

Notes

  • For a gallon lemonade recipe, simply double all the ingredient amounts listed above.
  • To make pink lemonade, add 1/4 cup of cranberry juice or a few drops of red food coloring to the mixture.
  • If you want state fair style lemonade, use slightly less water for a more concentrated, tangy flavor.
