A fast and flavorful homemade takeout-style beef and broccoli stir fry, ready in 30 minutes. This recipe features tender beef, crisp broccoli, and a savory soy-garlic sauce, perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for cooking
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets (about 4 cups)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, toss the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the broccoli florets to the same skillet. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and tender-crisp. Add a tablespoon or two of water if needed to help steam the broccoli.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and water or beef broth.
  6. Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the broccoli. Pour the sauce over the beef and broccoli.
  7. Stir everything together and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and coats the beef and broccoli.
  8. Serve immediately over cooked rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For best results, slice the beef when it is partially frozen.
  • You can substitute other cuts of beef like skirt steak or ribeye.
  • Adjust the amount of brown sugar to your preference for sweetness.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat.
